The Billy Reid/K-Swiss SXSW Shindig kicked off the music portion of the festival Wednesday at the Swan Dive, a newly opened venue in Austin that recalls a 1920s speakeasy. It wasn’t long before the venue reached capacity and the room took on the convivial bedlam of the Jazz Age.

SXSW Preview: The Romany Rye

The best place to hear The Romany Rye – where their fresh and vibrant but deeply rooted music comes alive on analog tape – is the Daytrotter session released last April. Here, sepia-toned tunes like “Brother” present a cross section of Laurel Canyon history – think early ‘70s Neil Young meets Jenny Lewis’ “Acid Tongue.”

The Romany Rye’s founding member, Luke MacMaster, is a native of Big Bear, California, which is about halfway (and a little north) between L.A. and Joshua Tree. He recorded and released his debut album, Highway 1, Looking Back Carefully, with Delta Spirit’s Kelly Winwrich, then went on tour with both Delta Spirit and fellow Cali country rock outfit Dawes last year.

The Billy Reid & K-Swiss SXSW Shindig, Presented by American Songwriter 

Well butter our buns and call us a biscuit, but it’s that time again. With the 25th Anniversary of SXSW less than a month away, we’re happy to announce the line-up for The Billy Reid & K-Swiss SXSW Shindig, presented by American Songwriter.

This year’s line-up will include performances by Hayes Carll, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Jason Isbell, Caitlin Rose, The Civil Wars, The Romany Rye, Keegan DeWitt and The Apache Relay.

Join us at The Swan Dive on Wednesday, March 16th, from noon to six, for a drink and the chance to catch some of the best music coming out of the Southland. The event is free, but you gotta RSVP right away.
